Child Immunization Schedule

September 10, 2026 7 min read Dr. Nyabikongori Team

Immunization is one of the most effective ways to protect children from serious, life-threatening diseases. According to the World Health Organization (WHO), vaccines prevent between 3.5 and 5 million deaths every year from diseases such as diphtheria, tetanus, pertussis, influenza, and measles.

Why Vaccines Are Important

A child's immune system is still developing, making them more vulnerable to infections. Vaccines work by training the immune system to recognize and fight specific pathogens, providing long-term protection without the child having to suffer through the actual disease.

In Kenya, the Kenya Expanded Programme on Immunization (KEPI), in partnership with the Ministry of Health, provides a free schedule of vaccines for all children from birth through adolescence.

Kenya's Recommended Immunization Schedule

The following is the standard immunization schedule for children in Kenya, as recommended by the Ministry of Health:

Age Vaccine Disease Prevented
At Birth BCG, OPV-0 Tuberculosis, Polio
6 Weeks Penta-1, PCV-1, Rota-1, OPV-1, IPV-1 Diphtheria, Tetanus, Pertussis, Hepatitis B, Hib, Pneumonia, Rotavirus, Polio
10 Weeks Penta-2, PCV-2, Rota-2, OPV-2 Same as above (booster)
14 Weeks Penta-3, PCV-3, OPV-3, IPV-2 Same as above (final dose)
6 Months Vitamin A Prevents vitamin A deficiency
9 Months Measles-Rubella (MR-1), Yellow Fever Measles, Rubella, Yellow Fever
18 Months MR-2, Yellow Fever booster Measles, Rubella, Yellow Fever
10 Years (Girls) HPV Vaccine (2 doses) Human Papillomavirus (cervical cancer prevention)

Common Side Effects of Vaccines

Most side effects are mild and short-lived. They may include:

  • Mild fever
  • Soreness or redness at the injection site
  • Irritability or drowsiness
  • Loss of appetite

Serious reactions are extremely rare. If a child develops a high fever, persistent crying, or difficulty breathing after vaccination, parents should seek medical attention immediately.

Tips for Parents

  • Always carry your child's immunization card (Child Health Booklet) to every visit.
  • Ensure all vaccines are given on time — delays can leave your child unprotected.
  • Feed and hydrate your child well before the vaccination appointment.
  • Keep the injection site clean and dry after vaccination.
  • Do not skip vaccines — every dose matters.
"Vaccines are a gift of health. By immunizing your child, you are not only protecting them — you are protecting your entire community."
